Psychoeducational Assessments in Calgary
A psychoeducational assessment shows how you or your child thinks and learns: the strengths to build on and the barriers in the way. It is the assessment schools, post-secondary programs and Alberta Student Aid ask for when learning is the question.

Is this assessment for you?
A psychoeducational assessment is for children, teens and adults. People usually come to us for one of these reasons:
Children and teens
- Reading, writing or math is much harder than expected, despite real effort
- Grades do not match how bright and curious your child is
- Attention, memory or organization get in the way of learning
- Your child needs documentation for an Individualized Program Plan or specialized program
- School stress is showing up as worry, avoidance or frustration
Adults and post-secondary students
- You need documentation for accommodations at university or college
- You want to apply for Alberta Student Aid funding for students with disabilities
- You have always suspected a learning disability that was never assessed
- A past assessment is more than 5 years old or was done before age 18
- You are returning to school or training and want to know how you learn best
Struggling with learning is common and has many possible causes. The assessment finds the ones that apply to you or your child.
What your report can help with
School
Recommendations for Individualized Program Plans, classroom accommodations and specialized programs.
Post-secondary and Student Aid
Documentation for exam accommodations, accessibility services and Alberta Student Aid reimbursement.
Work and training
Recommendations for workplace accommodations and how you learn new skills best.
Understanding
A clear map of strengths and challenges, with strategies that fit.
An assessment can be an important first step, but support doesn’t have to end with the report. Depending on your findings and recommendations, our team can help you explore counselling, therapeutic groups, or other appropriate supports at Your Counselling. Any additional services are optional and arranged separately.
How it works
Our psychologists use evidence-informed assessment methods, standardized measures, and recognized diagnostic criteria, where appropriate. Every assessment follows the same clear path, so you always know what comes next.

Common questions
What does a psychoeducational assessment look at?
Thinking and reasoning, memory, processing speed, language, reading, writing and math, plus attention and emotional well-being. Together they show why learning feels hard and what will help.
What ages do you assess?
Children from age 6, teens and adults of any age.
Will my report work for university or college?
Post-secondary programs usually ask for a recent assessment (within 5 years, or done at 18 or older) that confirms a diagnosis and describes how it affects learning, signed by a Registered Psychologist. Your report is written with those requirements in mind. Each school decides for itself, so include its requirements with your request.
Does it include ADHD?
Attention is part of every psychoeducational assessment, and an ADHD diagnosis can be made where the findings support it.
Will the assessment give me a diagnosis?
Not always, and that depends on the findings. Your report includes diagnostic conclusions where the results support them. Either way, it explains your strengths, what may be behind the difficulties you noticed, and practical recommendations.
Do you assess for autism?
Autism assessments are planned for early 2027. If autism is part of your question, choose the autism option on the request form to join the interest list, and we will suggest next steps in the meantime.
How do I prepare my child?
Describe it as puzzles and activities to learn how their brain likes to learn. A good night’s sleep, breakfast and any glasses or hearing aids are all they need.
Do you do gifted testing for Westmount or GATE?
Yes. If giftedness is the only question, our shorter gifted assessment is the better fit.
Can a doctor, therapist or school refer me?
Yes. Professionals can refer through our referral form, or you can reach out yourself. With your consent, we can share your report and recommendations with the person who referred you, so everyone supporting you is working from the same picture.
Is it covered by insurance?
Some extended health insurance plans provide coverage for psychological assessments. Coverage varies depending on the insurer, the type of assessment, and the provider’s registration. We recommend confirming your assessment coverage and any benefit limits before booking. We provide detailed receipts for your claim.
