Is this assessment for you?

People reach out to us at every age. You might be noticing some of these:

Children and teens

  • Differences in how your child communicates, plays or connects with others
  • Strong focused interests, or a need for routine and sameness
  • Big reactions to sounds, textures, lights or changes
  • Social situations at school are confusing or exhausting
  • A teacher, doctor or early childhood professional has raised autism

Adults

  • You have always felt different and worked hard to fit in
  • Social situations drain you, even ones you enjoy
  • You rely on routines and find unexpected change hard
  • Noise, light or crowds can overwhelm you
  • A family member was diagnosed, and you see yourself in their story

Many of these experiences overlap with anxiety, ADHD and other differences. A careful assessment looks at all of them.

What your report can help with

Understanding

Language for how you or your child experiences the world, and a clearer sense of strengths.

School supports

Recommendations for Individualized Program Plans and classroom accommodations.

Work and post-secondary

Documentation for accommodations at work, college or university.

Access to support

Documentation for funding, programs and services that require a diagnosis.

An assessment can be an important first step, but support doesn’t have to end with the report. Depending on your findings and recommendations, our team can help you explore counselling, therapeutic groups, or other appropriate supports at Your Counselling. Any additional services are optional and arranged separately.

How it works

Our psychologists use evidence-informed assessment methods, standardized measures, and recognized diagnostic criteria, where appropriate. Every assessment follows the same clear path, so you always know what comes next.

  1. Send a requestFill out a short form about you or your child and what you are hoping to learn. Sending it does not book anything or commit you.About 5 minutes, online
  2. We review and replyOur intake team reviews your request with your psychologist, confirms the right assessment and fee, and contacts you to book your first appointment.By phone or email
  3. Intake and developmental historyWe learn about early development, school and relationships. For children this is with parents, and for adults a family member can join if that helps.About 2 to 3 hours, can be split
  4. Autism-specific assessmentA structured assessment that is play-based or conversation-based, depending on age.About 1.5 hours
  5. Cognitive and well-being testingTesting and questionnaires that show strengths and rule out other explanations.About 2 hours
  6. Your written reportA comprehensive written report outlining assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions where supported, and individualized recommendations. Written in plain language. A Registered Psychologist reviews and signs it.Usually about 3 to 4 weeks after your last testing session
  7. Feedback meetingWe walk through your results, answer your questions and talk about next steps.About 1 hour, in person or online

Common questions

When can I book an autism assessment?

We plan to open bookings in early 2027. Choose the autism option on the request form to join the interest list, and our intake team will contact you as soon as bookings open.

Can adults be diagnosed with autism?

Yes. Many adults are first diagnosed in their 20s, 30s or later, often after years of masking or after a family member’s diagnosis. We ask about your childhood too, and a parent or sibling can help fill in early history if that is possible.

What tools do you use?

We use well-established, standardized autism assessment tools alongside interviews and questionnaires. We explain each one at your intake.

Can autism and ADHD be assessed together?

Yes. They often occur together, and we will be able to look at both in one assessment. Fees will be confirmed before bookings open.

Will the assessment give me a diagnosis?

Not always, and that depends on the findings. Your report includes diagnostic conclusions where the results support them. Either way, it explains your strengths, what may be behind the difficulties you noticed, and practical recommendations.

Can you make the space comfortable for sensory needs?

Yes. Tell us what helps, such as lighting, breaks, fidgets or a support person, and we will plan around it.

Will the diagnosis be accepted by funding programs?

Your report includes diagnostic conclusions where the findings support them, and is signed by a Registered Psychologist. Each program sets its own requirements, so share them with us before you start.

My child is younger than 6. Can you help?

We assess from age 6. For younger children, your family doctor can refer you to public early childhood services, and we are happy to point you in the right direction.

Can a doctor, therapist or school refer me?

Yes. Professionals can refer through our referral form, or you can reach out yourself. With your consent, we can share your report and recommendations with the person who referred you, so everyone supporting you is working from the same picture.

Is it covered by insurance?

Some extended health insurance plans provide coverage for psychological assessments. Coverage varies depending on the insurer, the type of assessment, and the provider’s registration. We recommend confirming your assessment coverage and any benefit limits before booking. We provide detailed receipts for your claim.

Who completes your assessment
