Is this assessment for you?

Adults often come to us after a lifetime of hearing they just need to try harder. You might recognize yourself in some of these:

  • You lose focus in meetings, reading or conversations, even when you care about them
  • Deadlines sneak up on you, and you do your best work at the last minute
  • You start many things and finish few, or jump between tasks all day
  • You misplace keys, phone or paperwork more often than the people around you
  • Your mind feels busy or restless, and slowing down is hard
  • Your child was recently diagnosed, and their story sounds a lot like yours
  • Someone has suggested ADHD, but you have never had a full assessment
  • You need documentation for work or school accommodations

Recognizing yourself here is a reason to ask, not a diagnosis. Anxiety, sleep, stress and other things can affect focus too, and a careful assessment sorts out what is really going on.

What your report can help with

Your healthcare providers

Diagnostic findings and recommendations that can help inform discussions with your healthcare providers, including about treatment and medication.

Work accommodations

Documentation and recommendations you can share with your employer, if and when you choose.

School and Student Aid

Documentation for post-secondary accommodations and Alberta Student Aid funding.

Understanding yourself

Language for what you have been living with, and strategies matched to your strengths.

An assessment can be an important first step, but support doesn’t have to end with the report. Depending on your findings and recommendations, our team can help you explore counselling, therapeutic groups, or other appropriate supports at Your Counselling. Any additional services are optional and arranged separately.

How it works

Our psychologists use evidence-informed assessment methods, standardized measures, and recognized diagnostic criteria, where appropriate. Every assessment follows the same clear path, so you always know what comes next.

  1. Send a requestFill out a short form about you or your child and what you are hoping to learn. Sending it does not book anything or commit you.About 5 minutes, online
  2. We review and replyOur intake team reviews your request with your psychologist, confirms the right assessment and fee, and contacts you to book your first appointment.By phone or email
  3. Intake interviewA structured interview about your childhood, school, work, health and what you notice day to day. With your permission, someone who knows you well can fill out a short questionnaire.About 1.5 hours
  4. Testing sessionAttention and executive functioning tasks plus questionnaires. We also look at anxiety, mood and sleep, so nothing that looks like ADHD gets missed.About 2 hours
  5. Your written reportA comprehensive written report outlining assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions where supported, and individualized recommendations. Written in plain language. A Registered Psychologist reviews and signs it.Usually about 3 to 4 weeks after your last testing session
  6. Feedback meetingWe walk through your results, answer your questions and talk about next steps.About 1 hour, in person or online

Common questions

Can I be diagnosed with ADHD as an adult?

Yes. Many adults are diagnosed for the first time in their 20s, 30s or later, often once life asks more than their coping strategies can carry. ADHD starts in childhood, so we ask about your early years too, but you do not need a childhood diagnosis.

Can you prescribe medication?

Psychologists do not prescribe medication. With your consent, your report gives your family doctor or psychiatrist the findings and recommendations that can help inform a conversation about treatment options, including medication.

What should I bring?

If you have them, bring old report cards, past assessments and a list of current medications. They help, and they are not required.

How is this different from a psychoeducational assessment?

An ADHD assessment focuses on attention and executive functioning. A psychoeducational assessment adds cognitive and academic testing, which post-secondary programs often ask for when learning is also a concern. If you are unsure, choose “Not sure yet” on the request form.

Will my employer find out?

Only if you tell them. Your report belongs to you, and you decide whether to share it and with whom.

Will the assessment give me a diagnosis?

Not always, and that depends on the findings. Your report includes diagnostic conclusions where the results support them. Either way, it explains your strengths, what may be behind the difficulties you noticed, and practical recommendations.

Can a doctor, therapist or school refer me?

Yes. Professionals can refer through our referral form, or you can reach out yourself. With your consent, we can share your report and recommendations with the person who referred you, so everyone supporting you is working from the same picture.

Is it covered by insurance?

Some extended health insurance plans provide coverage for psychological assessments. Coverage varies depending on the insurer, the type of assessment, and the provider’s registration. We recommend confirming your assessment coverage and any benefit limits before booking. We provide detailed receipts for your claim.
